Rome Spring 2023 Program

Come to Italy to read literature, write a memoir, learn Italian, build your resume alongside Romans, and make new friends while falling in love with Rome.

English professor Sarah Boggs and academic counselor Camila Acosta will co-lead an unforgettable semester in the Eternal City in the Spring of 2023. Not only is Rome heartbreakingly beautiful with its 2000 year old buildings, but the food, the people, the sound of the language, and the cappuccino will make it impossible for you not to fall madly in love with Rome.

This trip will offer Italian Literature and Creative Nonfiction classses and a personal development course as well as Italian Language. The program will also offer an optional work experience opportunity which will allow you to experience an internship in Rome. Local instructors will teach beginning and intermediate Italian language courses.

Imagine traveling to the 2000-year-old city of Pompeii, which was preserved after the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. After Pompeii, you might continue to the Amalfi Coast, and spend time in Sorrento and on the island of Capri, where you can experience la dolce vita (The sweet life). Take a boat tour around the island and stop at the blue grotto to see the amazing water.

Sarah Boggs

Sarah has been teaching writing and Literature courses for the last twenty years. Her passions, in no particular order, include reading, writing, teaching, her family and friends, and all things Italian. Sarah led her first study abroad to Rome in the Spring of 2019, and has been missing it every day since. She is thrilled to use all of the local knowledge she gained during the last trip to make this one even better.

Sarah has taught at UCSB, University of California at Berkeley, Ventura College and now is a full time member of the English Department at SBCC. She completed her undergraduate work as an English Literature Major at UCSB. earned a Masters with an Emphasis in Creative Writing from CSU Chico and finally a PHD in Language, Literacy and Composition from UCSB鈥檚 Gevirtz Graduate School of Education. Sarah will be traveling to Rome with her husband Peter, and her daughter鈥檚 Madeleine and Grace.

Camila Acosta

Camila Acosta

Camila has been teaching and counseling students for 15 years, first at UCSB and now at SBCC in the EOPS program. She arrived at SBCC when she was 19 from Brazil with a few words of English and an adventurous spirit. She completed her AA at SBCC then transferred to Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, where she earned a Bachelor鈥� degree in Business Administration. Subsequently, Camila earned her Master鈥檚 degree in Counseling from California Lutheran University.

Santa Barbara is Camila鈥檚 second home, where she has resided since 1998. Prior to moving to Santa Barbara, Camila was born and raised in Brazil and moved to Santa Barbara to pursue higher education. She married her husband Jethro, who is a native Santa Barbara and learned Portuguese to win her over. They have two children, Luana and Mateo.

In her counseling work she strives to help students actualize their educational dreams and to define and meet their non-academic goals. . In addition to teaching and counseling, Camila loves to travel and has visited 10 countries. In her spare time she can be found at the beach, practicing yoga, hiking, reading and spending time with friends and family.

As part of the academic program, students will participate in many excursions, including: (These excursions are tentative and subject to change)

Walking tours in Rome
Welcome pizza reception
Three-day, two-night excursion to Sorrento/Pompeii/Capri, or similar, including coach and ferry transport, two half-day guides, and entries
Optional internship placement in Rome (48 hrs for the semester.) ($500 placement fee)
Guest lectures in Rome

In addition, to acquaint program participants with the cultural aspects of life in Rome, a series of optional free or inexpensive activities is planned, which varies but often includes lectures on local customs and contemporary issues, sports events, and walking tours.

You do not have to be currently enrolled at SBCC to apply for the program. However, you must meet the following requirements:

Must be in good academic standing to participate in the program
Must be at least 18 years old on the day of departure
Must have successfully completed at least 12 college level units
Must have a minimum grade point average of 2.5 or higher
ENG110 Pre-requisite
There is no major or language requirement for this program

After acceptance to the program and official program-go announcement:
- You must enroll at SBCC for the spring 2023 semester in order to participate in the program.
- If you have not completed ENG110 at SBCC, but have completed an equivalent course at a different college or have completed an AP English Test with a score of 3 or higher, please view options for clearing a prerequisite on the website.
- If you are currently taking ENG110 at SBCC, please provide the name and contact information for your professor so a progress report can be requested.
- You will need to enrollment in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) of the U.S. Department of State is required by Accent Global Learning prior to leaving on the program. prior to departure.
- You must provide proof of Covid-19 vaccination to participate in this program. The Green Pass or equivalent (CDC White Card) is necessary to enter the Accent Study Center. Participants鈥� proof of vaccination (CDC Card) must indicate the last dose within the previous 9 months from the end date of the program. A booster will be required for anyone who received the original vaccination more than 9 months from the last day of the program. Subject to change without notice. Pleae contact Accent Global Learning directly for the most up-to-date requirement.
- You must follow the steps provided in the registration letter to register for courses on this program once registation opens for you. Course CRN numbers can not be accessed via the SBCC course catalog.
- You must complete, sign and return all legal documents to SBCC Study Abroad. Not submitting the required legal documents on time may cancel you from the program.

Acceptance and participation in the program is not guaranteed until you receive officiall notification from the SBCC Study Abroad office and you make your application fee payment, which will be invoiced by Accent Global Learning.

The courses that are offered as part of the program are usually transferable to the University of California and California State University. Check with your academic advisor for possible exceptions. You must enroll in a minimum of 14 units throughout the whole program. Please note the ENG110 Requirement.

WEXP 290 General Work Experience (1 Unit)
Combines academic study and practical work experience to develop students' marketable skills. Students pursue new or expanded responsibilities or learning opportunities beyond those experienced during previous employment. Student jobs need not be related to their educational goals. 1 unit = 60 hours unpaid work or internship. Transfer Information: CSU Transferable.

Accent Global Learning will offer assistance to find a placement for participants interested in an internship for a maximum of 60 hours during the Spring 2023 program. Accent Global Learning cannot guarantee internship placement, as it depends on the availability of placements and suitability of the candidate. Participants will receive credit for the internship from SBCC, participants must submit all required additional paperwork to Accent before November 28, 2022. Participants will pay the optional internship placement fee of $500 directly to Accent Global Learning in U.S. dollars upon arrival to Rome.

- Ground transfer from and to the Rome airport is only included for those students on the group flight. Students who purchase their own flight tickets may request a seat on the pick-up directly from Accent Global Learning on a space-available basis and an additional fee may be requested by Accent
- Quarantine housing in case of Covid infection (please go to "Housing" for more details on Quarantine housing costs)
- CFAR/IFAR Trip cancellation Insurance (Strongly recommended to recover costs should the program be canceled due to Covid after the application deadline.)

All payments for the program cost and/or group flight must be made to Accent Global Learning by each participant. Payment amounts may vary if you choose the Travel Package or Deferred Payment Plan. All payments, including any supplements, will be paid directly to Accent Global Learning.

Air Transportation. SBCC has contracted with Accent Global Learning to provide travel and housing arrangements for the Rome Spring 2023 Semester Program.

Once the program has reached its 20-student minimum, Accent Global Learning with Frosch Student Travel will organize an optional round-trip group flight from LAX to Rome on a regularly scheduled airline.

Airfare is not included in the program price.

The group flight must have a minimum of 10 participants. Space on the group flight cannot be guaranteed after flight payment deadline of October 28, 2022.

Estimated cost of group flight: $1229

You may make your own travel arrangements if you do not wish to travel with the group. You are strongly encouraged to purchase Trip Cancellation insurance with CFAR (Cancel for any reason) or IFAR (Interrupt for any reason) add on.

Accent Global Learning representative(s) will meet the participants of the group flight at the appropriate airport in Rome
For the group arrival transfer, Accent Global Learning will arrange a coach bus or taxi transfer from the Rome airport to the designated arrival point in Rome.
Participants missing the designated group arrival transfer are responsible for checking in at the designated arrival point and time on the scheduled date of arrival and are responsible for all transfer arrangements and costs.
Detailed arrival information will be provided to all participants approximately two weeks prior to arrival.
Participants who are unable to check in at the designated arrival point and time may be required to make and pay for their own accommodations for the first night.
On the group departure date, Accent Global Learning will arrange a group transfer (via coach bus and/or taxi) from the designated departure point in Rome to the Rome airport.
Transportation to and from LAX are not included
Accent Global Learning Rome will provide a Rome transit pass to each participant, valid on bus and metro for the Rome portion of the program.

Other Transportation:

- Transportation is included to and from mandatory excursions
- Accent Global Learning will provide students with a Rome transit pass for the duration of the program (bus and metro)

- Double/triple occupancy rooms in shared student apartments with a kitchen, bathroom, and general living area.
- Pets are not allowed in program housing
- Exact housing placements will be given to participants upon arrival
- Roommates can be requested via the Accent Global Learning Portal Housing Questionnaire

Should participants have to self-quarantine outside of program housing due to a positive test for COVID-19 during the program or due to local quarantine mandates for international travelers upon arrival, Accent Global Learning will assist in locating temporary housing for the participant as quickly as possible. The cost for this temporary housing will be as follows:

Nightly cost for temporary quarantine housing in Rome: $125
Nightly cost for temporary quarantine housing in Sorrento/ Pompeii/ Capri: $90

The cost for quarantine housing is the responsibility of the student and will be invoiced to the student directly by Accent Global Learning

The program cost does not include a per student security deposit. Students are responsible for payment of any charges related to damages, losses, and/or expenses that are incurred by the student in the program. These charges will be invoiced to the student within 12 weeks of the end of the program and are payable immediately upon receipt of the invoice. The invoice will be accompanied by an itemized list of damages, losses, and/or expenses attributed to each student.

Due to the ongoing pandemic and potential changes, this information is subject to change.

Application Deadline: Sunday, October 16, 2022.

Start your application process well in advance of the application deadline. You will need to submit several required documents with your online application. Some of the documents need to be completed by school officials and other persons, which may take several days or weeks. You must have your completed required documents before you start your online application.

All required documents needed for your online application are:

1. A current photo. This should be a close-up headshot which clearly identifies you. Please do not wear sunglasses or hats.

2. Unofficial Transcript. The transcript must show the name of your institution, your full name, all the courses you have taken so far with the grade and your GPA. Screenshots from your phone can not be accepted unless each image identifies your institution and your name.

3. A completed Student Conduct Release Form. This form must be completed by the school official at your current or most recent institution who is responsible for Student Conduct. If that is SBCC for you, the form can be sent to Candee Gyll at gyllc@sbcc.edu. Be sure you complete the top part of the form and clearly identify the program you are applying for (Rome Spring 2023). Failure to clearly identify the program may result in a delay in processing your application and forms.

4. Two recommendation forms. One form must be from a current or past professor/ teacher. The second form can be completed by a professor/ teacher, advisor, coach, manager or supervisor.

Instructions for the Student Conduct Release Form and Recommendation Form before starting your online application:
1. Download each fillable PDF form and save them to your computer.
2. Complete the parts as instructed in the document and save the form again with the changes.
3. Email the forms with your information to the individuals who will complete them and request they return them to you.
4. Once the forms have been returned to you, click on the Online Application link below to start the application process.
5. Upload all required documents with your online application.
6. You will get to a screen that confirms your application and all forms have been submitted. If you do not get to that screen, your application has not been submitted.

ONLINE APPLICATION

Please make sure you read all the instructions on how to apply before starting your application. All information on the application will be lost when you close the site. You will need to complete your required documents prior to starting the application.

After submission of your application it will be reviewed and forwarded to the program directors, who will reach out to you for an interview. Interviews may be held in person or by phone, Zoom or Skype.

You will be notified of your acceptance into the program in writing via email from the Study Abroad office. You are not officially confirmed on the program until you receive the notification and return the Student Participation Agreement, which will be sent with the notification.

Once you have officially been accepted to the program, the application will be forwarded to Accent Global Learning who will get in touch with you for the payment of the application fee. The non-refundable $250 application fee will have to be payed directly to Accent Global Learning. We advise you to make sure you have the amount of the application fee set aside at the time you apply to the program.

Please review the cancelation policy below.

Subsequent payments must be made directly to Accent Global Learning. Failure to make any payment when due will automatically cancel you from the program one week after the payment due date. All payments are effective the day they are received by Accent Global Learning. A deferred payment plan is offered by Accent Global Learning to students who receive financial aid and must be requested from Accent Global Learning directly upon acceptance to the program.

71 days or more prior to start of program: $250
50-70 days prior to start of program: $2,500
30-49 days prior to start of program: $3,000
15-29 days prior to start of program: $4,000
0-14 days prior to start of progra: No refund

Should the program be cancelled by SBCC after the program start date, no refund amount can be guaranteed, although Accent Global Learning will make reasonable efforts to seek refunds from third parties for costs not yet incurred.

In case of program cancellation during the program, Accent Global Learning will assist students with organizing return tickets home. Any additional charges for transportation or housing will be at the student's expense.

We strongly encourage all participants to purchase a Trip Cancellation policy with the CFAR (Cancel for any reason) and/or IFAR (Interrupt for any reason) policy add-on once the program goes forward. Covid-related cancellations are not covered if the program gets canceled after the application deadline.

IMPORTANT UPDATE REGARDING COVID-19 & REQUIREMENTS

SBCC and Accent Global Learning require that all program participants (students, faculty leaders, spouses, Accent Study Center staff alike) be fully vaccinated prior to their departure to Italy. There are no exemptions to the vaccination mandate. The Green Pass or equivalent (CDC White Card) is necessary to enter the Accent Study Center. Participants鈥� proof of vaccination (their CDC Card) must indicate the last dose within the previous 9 months in order to be considered current. If you received your original vaccination (2nd dose or Johnson & Johnson 1 dose) prior to August 2022, you will need a booster. Furthermore, as proof of vaccination may be required for entry into Italy as well as establishments, institutions and transportation in Italy, Accent Global Learning and SBCC are not responsible for participants鈥� inability to gain entry to Italy or participate in required program activities, lectures, visits or excursions due to lack of proof of vaccination. Please refer to .

In addition, if you are planning on traveling outside of Italy, please keep in mind that the majority of European citizens are now fully vaccinated, and local regulations provide the freedom to explore, learn, travel, and partake in the unique cultural experiences we have offered for many years. In most cases, however, these freedoms apply solely to fully-vaccinated individuals (or those who have recently recovered from COVID-19).

Some countries have stricter regulations, declaring that only vaccinated or recovered people can participate in indoor activities (for example, restaurant and museums visits), and a negative test will not be sufficient for entry.

All program participants deserve a transformational academic experience abroad and should be permitted equal access to all elements of their international program.

Traveling in the Schengen area prior to or after the program dates: You can not stay more than 90 days in the Schengen area. If you plan on traveling prior to the start date of the program, or after the program ends, you can not stay in the Schengen area as the program is 88 days long. You may leave the Schengen area any chance you get during the program (i.e. on weekends when no mandatory excursions are planned) to subtract days from your total stay in the Schengen area. Leave the Schengen area via an airport so you have proof of exiting the Schengen area. You will most likely not be able to apply for any type of visa to stay beyond the 90 days. However, you may call the Italian embassy to inquire and SBCC Study Abroad can provide you with a letter of proof of your program participation including program dates upon request.

Program Orientation: A mandatory pre-departure meeting will be conducted in person on the SBCC campus in December 2022, introducing the academic course work, addressing general aspects of study abroad and cross-cultural learning, and providing practical information regarding preparation and travel. Details will be provided to participants at a later date. It is the responsibility of the students to provide this information to parents or guardians. Due to FERPA regulations, the Study Abroad office communicates only directly with the student participants.

An on-site orientation in Rome will be held by Accent Global Learning staff on the day after arrival and covers practical matters as well as aspects of cross-cultural living and learning, giving program participants the tools they need to make the most of their time in Rome.
