Co-Director Michelle Paddack, Ph.D:
Professor Michelle Paddack is passionate about the ocean and sharing its beauty with students.  Her marine science classes are designed to be experiential so that students can interact directly with what they are learning.  She loves teaching students of all majors, helping them to enjoy science and nature while discovering their own paths.  Professor Paddack recently returned from Bali, where she led the spring semester program for SBCC.

Many SBCC students have been involved in Michelle’s scientific research; specializing in reef ecology and biocultural conservation.  She works closely with fishermen and indigenous peoples whose lives rely upon oceans to revive and strengthen traditional cultural practices and knowledge by sharing ecological knowledge and scientific perspectives to support sustainable, thriving, diverse communities.  Working across the globe and bringing those experiences back into the classroom provides students with a unique perspective of science in action. 

Prior to her scientific career, Michelle was a Principal Dancer with a professional dance company in Washington, D.C. ‘Images of Cultural Artistry.’  She feels so honored to have achieved her own life dreams and strives to help people discover and realize their own aspirations and see how their own passions can ripple out into supporting a vibrant, connected, healthy world.

Co-Director Betsy Phillips:
At SBCC Betsy Phillips has been teaching as an adjunct professor of Sociology as well as for the Addictions Department and International Students Department for the past five years, as well as an LCSW/Counselor in the Student Health Department. You can also find her at the UCSB Acacia Counseling Center, and she works as a job skills coordinator for Domestic Violence Solutions. Professor Phillips has worked extensively as an activist and social worker with a large variety of populations and cultures, teaching coursework in Multicultural Counseling, Marriage family and Intimacy, Introduction to Social Work with a focus on International Social work. She is fascinated by the interplay of culture and social change theories, and is particularly interested in environmental social work.  She has a BA in Latin American Studies and a minor in Biology from Carleton College and a masters in Social Work from the University of Utah.  She has a second degree in Dance, and has additionally been teaching Yoga, Pilates, Barre, and Dance classes for the past twenty years.

You do not have to be currently enrolled at SBCC to apply for the program. However, you must meet the following requirements:

• Must be in good academic standing to participate in the program (GPA 2.0 >>, no disciplinary actions)
• Must be at least 18 years old on the day of departure
• Must have successfully completed at least 12 college level units
• Must have a minimum grade point average of 2.5
• There is no major or language requirement for this program
  
  

Once the Study Abroad Office has sent out the official confirmation that the program is moving forward: 
- You must enroll at SBCC for the fall 2023 semester
- You must register for all courses offered on the program when registration opens for you
- You must show proof of international health insurance. SBCC requires basic medical insurance, which covers illness and accidents abroad as well as the cost of returning students to the US if needed.
- You must complete, sign, and return all legal documents to SBCC Study Abroad
- Should the country of Indonesia have Covid vaccination requirements, you must fulfill the requirements to participate in the program. Vaccination exemption can not be granted in that case.

Acceptance and participation in the program is not guaranteed until you have completed the interview with the program director and all required documents are received by the Study Abroad office.

The courses that are offered as part of the program are usually transferable to the University of California and California State University. Check with your academic advisor for possible exceptions.  You must enroll in a minimum of 13 units throughout the whole program. 

BIOL 125 Marine Biology (4 Units)
Study of marine plants and animals, with emphasis on local organisms and their ecological adaptations. Laboratory includes visits to local coastal and marine ecosystems. SBCC General Education: SBCCGE Area A. Transfer Information: CSUGE Area B2, CSUGE Area B3, IGETC Area 5B, IGETC Area 5C, CSU Transferable, UC Transferable. UC Transfer Limit:  and  combined: maximum credit, one course.
Note: Course may be replaced with Biol 124 (Biological Oceanography) if has already been taken

ERTH 151 Introductory Physical Oceanography (3 Units)
Designed for students desiring a broadly-based analysis of the physical aspects of the oceans. Study of the origin of the continents and oceans, marine geology, chemistry of seawater, currents, waves, tides and the ocean environment. Required of Marine Science majors. SBCC General Education: SBCCGE Area A Lecture. Transfer Information: CSUGE Area B1, IGETC Area 5A, CSU Transferable, UC Transferable.UC Transfer Limit:  and  combined: maximum credit, one course.

SOC 103 Marriage, Family and Intimacy (3 Units)
Investigates the family as a social and cultural institution. Examines the increasing diversity of American families, along with cross-cultural comparisons. Examines gender roles in the family and intimate relationships. Topics include love, partner selection, marital adjustment, communication and conflict resolution, divorce, domestic violence and parenting. SBCC General Education: SBCCGE Area B, SBCCGE Area E5 Transfer Information: CSUGE Area D0, CSUGE Area E, IGETC Area 4J, CSU Transferable, UC Transferable C-ID: SOCI 130.

ANTH 113 Witchcraft, Magic, Science And Religion (3 Units)
Introductory course designed to examine belief systems of a wide variety of cultures around the world. SBCC General Education: SBCCGE Area B, SBCCGE Area E5. Transfer Information: CSUGE Area D1, IGETC Area 4A, CSU Transferable, UC Transferable.

All payments except the application fee but including any supplements, will be invoiced by Latitudes to each participant at least 2 weeks prior to the payment deadline.

Airfare is not included in the program price.

Latitudes Abroad, LLC will offer a group flight round-trip fare LAX-DPS-LAX estimated at $1400 with the exact dates to be determined. The group flight must have a minimum of 10 participants by May 7, 2023. Space on the group flight cannot be guaranteed after flight payment deadline. A maximum of 22 spots are available on the group flight. For students who would like to join the group flight after it is full, Latitudes Abroad  can help students purchase individual tickets on the same flight or a similar flight. 

You may make your own travel arrangements if you do not wish to travel with the group.  You are strongly encouraged to purchase Trip Cancellation insurance with CFAR/ IFAR Add-on once you make your program payment. Please do preliminary research on CFAR/IFAR Trip Cancelation insurance as some providers only allow for 24 hrs after making the payment to purchase this coverage. Some providers allow up to 21 days after making your payment to purchase the coverage. It is the responsibility of the student participant to purchase their insurance.

Double-occupancy rooms at 3-star hotels with air-conditioning and swimming pools. A limited amount of single room requests can be accommodated at an additional fee of $1,750 (subject to availability.)

Quarantine housing is not included in the program cost and must be covered by the student if quarantine is required due to a positive Covid test. We stongly suggest purchasing insurance covering quarantine housing.

All efforts will be made to match roommates based on age, gender, habits and preferences. Roommate requests made by both students will also be considered.

STEPS TO APPLY:

Start your application process well in advance of the application deadline. You will need to submit several required documents with your online application. Some of the documents need to be completed by school officials and other persons, which may take several days or weeks. You are not able to submit your application without the completed required documents.

Required documents needed for your online application are:

1. A current photo. This should be a close-up headshot which clearly identifies you. Please do not wear sunglasses or hats.

2. Unofficial Transcript. The transcript must show the name of your institution, your full name, all the courses you have taken so far with the grade and your GPA. Screenshots from your phone can not be accepted unless each image identifies your institution and your name. 

3. A completed Student Conduct Release Form. This form must be completed by the school official at your current or most recent institution who is responsible for Student Conduct. If that is SBCC for you, the form can be sent to Candee Gyll at gyllc@sbcc.edu. Be sure you complete the top part of the form and clearly identify the program you are applying for (Bali Fall 2023). Failure to clearly identify the program may result in a delay in processing your application and forms. The form should be returned to you so you can upload it with your online application

4. Two recommendation forms. One form must be from a current or past professor/ teacher. The second form can be completed by a professor/ teacher, advisor, coach, manager or supervisor.

Instructions for the Student Conduct Release Form and Recommendation Form before starting your online application.  We recommend you do this on your computer or labtop, not on your phone.

1. Download each fillable PDF form and save them to your computer.
2. Complete the parts as instructed in the document and save the form again with the changes.
3. Email the forms with your information to the individuals who will complete them and request they return them to you.
4. Once the forms have been returned to you, click on the Online Application link below to start the application process.
5. Upload all required documents with your online application.
6. You will get to a screen that confirms your application and all forms have been submitted. If you do not get to that screen, your application has not been submitted.

ONLINE APPLICATION

Please make sure you read all the instructions on how to apply before starting your application. All information on the application will be lost when you close the site.   You will need to complete your required documents prior to starting the application to you can upload them with the form.

After submission of your application it will be reviewed and forwarded to the program directors, who will reach out to you for an interview.  Interviews may be held in person or by phone, Zoom, or Skype.
 
You will be notified of your official acceptance into the program in writing via email from the Study Abroad office. A verbal accetance from the program director is not official. You are not officially confirmed on the program until you receive the notification and return the Student Participation Agreement, which will be sent with the notification. 

Once you have officially been accepted to the program, the application will be forwarded to Latitudes Abroad LLC.,  who will get in touch with you for the payment of the application fee. The non-refundable $450 application fee will have to be payed directly to Latitudes Abroad LLC. We advise you to make sure you have the amount of the application fee set aside at the time you apply for the program.

Please review the cancelation policy below.
 
Subsequent payments must be made directly to Latitudes Abroad LLC. Failure to make any payment when due will automatically cancel you from the program one week after the payment due date. All payments are effective the day they are received by Latitudes Abroad LLC.

Cancellation/ Withdrawal from the program must be made in writing to SBCC and Latitudes Abroad LLC and is effective the date of the receipt. The following cancellation fees apply:

Cancel by May 7, 2023 = $450
Cancel after May 8 but before July 1, 2023 = $1,250
Cancel after July 1, 2023 or after = no refund

The above referenced cancellation fees are in addition to any cancellation fees for the group airfare (estimated $100).

• Should Latitudes Abroad, LLC and SBCC cancel the program due to lack of enrollment or safety concerns on or after June 1, 2023, then all participants at that time shall receive a full refund of their program costs
  minus any non-recoverable costs. This is in addition to any airline cancellation fees.
• If the program has already departed, assemble the students and faculty in a safe location and upon consultation and agreement with SBCC, Latitudes Abroad, LLC will coordinate arrangements to fly the students and faculty back to the USA.  In this case, students will receive a pro-rated refund of all fees paid to Latitudes Abroad, LLC for the proportion of the program not completed minus any non-recoverable costs, including any costs incurred in coordinating the flights back to the USA.
