Madrid Fall 2020 Program

The SBCC Study Abroad Program to Madrid, Spain in the fall 2020 will offer courses in Spanish Language and Culture, Communication and Sociology. Students will go on the program with our service provider ACCENT and take courses with local staff. Courses will transfer to UC/CSU as listed in the SBCC course catalog and you will be enrolled at SBCC for the duration of the program. In addition, students can choose to participate in an internship!

Walking the streets of Madrid, visiting museums and palaces, students will live in the capital of one of the great European empires, which will anchor lively discussions about nationality and identity. The exciting, interdisciplinary coursework will immerse students in the language and culture of Spain.

Note: This is NOT a SBCC faculty-led program. Local ACCENT instructors will lead the classes.

To acquaint students with the cultural aspects of life in Madrid, there will be a series of optional free or inexpensive activities which varies but often includes lectures on local customs and contemporary issues, sports events, walking tours and meals. 

As part of the program, students will enjoy the following highlights:
- A ballet, opera or classical music performance
- A four-day, three-night excursion to Barcelona with half-day guide and entries. 

You do not have to be currently enrolled at SBCC to apply for the program. However, you must meet the following requirements:
• Must be in good academic standing to participate in the program
• Must be at least 18 years old on the day of departure
• Must have successfully completed at least 12 college level units
• Must have a minimum grade point average of 2.5
• There is no major or language requirement for this program

After acceptance to the program and official program go announcement:
- Must enroll at SBCC for the Fall 2020 semester in order to participate in the program
- Must purchase international health insurance
- Must purchase Trip Cancellation insurance

Acceptance and participation in the program is not guaranteed until you have completed the interview with the program director and all required documents are received by the Study Abroad office.

The courses that are offered as part of the program are usually transferable to the University of California and California State University. Check with your academic advisor for possible exceptions.  You must enroll in a minimum of 14 units throughout the whole program.

Program Fee Includes:

  • Accommodations in double-occupancy rooms in shared student housing (for details see "Housing")
  • Four-day, three-night excursion to Barcelona including transportation, accommodations and guides
  • One evening performance
  • Pre-departure and overseas orientation and practical walking tour of areas around the ACCENT Madrid Study Center
  • Welcome and farewell dinners
  • Overseas information and resource center with ACCENT Madrid Study Center on-site staff
  • Madrid transit pass
  • 24/7 ACCENT staff emergency access and counseling helpline toll-free
  • Access to Study Center during opening hours Monday - Friday (closed on weekends and national holidays)
  • Limited access to computer lab with Internet/Wifi access during regular business hours
  • STEPS enrollment

Program Fee Does Not Include:

  • Round-trip airfare (an optional group flight is available through ACCENT) see "Travel"
  • Passport or visa fees
  • Meals other than those listed
  • SBCC tuition, fees, books (non-residents are required to pay out-of-state or out-of-country fees)
  • Personal expenses
  • Additional fieldtrips and excursions to those listed
  • Print cards for computer lab
  • Travel, commercial trip cancellation or personal property Insurance
  • Any charges relating to damages, losses or expenses incurred at the housing accommodations
  • Transportation to and from LAX 
  • Ground transfer from and to the airport in Madrid is only included in the group flight
  • Housing supplement for homestay (see "HOUSING")
  • Internship Placement fee ($250)

Air Transportation
Airfare is not included in the program price. SBCC has contracted with ACCENT to provide travel and housing arrangements for the Madrid Semester Program.

Once the program has reached it's 20 student minimum, ACCENT with Frosch Student Travel will organize an optional round-trip group flight from LAX to Madrid on a regularly scheduled airline.

The group flight must have a minimum of 10 participants. Space on the group flight cannot be guaranteed after flight payment deadline of May 25, 2020.

You may make your own travel arrangements if you do not wish to travel with the group.

ACCENT representative(s) will meet the participants of the group flight at the appropriate airport in Madrid
For the group arrival transfer, ACCENT will arrange a coach bus or taxi transfer from the Rome airport to the designated arrival point in Madrid.

Participants missing the designated group arrival transfer are responsible for checking in at the designated arrival point and time on the scheduled date of arrival and are responsible for all transfer arrangements and costs.

Detailed arrival information will be provided to all participants approximately two weeks prior to arrival.

Participants who are unable to check in at the designated arrival point and time may be required to make and pay for their own accommodations for the first night.

On the group departure date, ACCENT will arrange a group transfer (via coach bus and/or taxi) from the designated departure point in Madrid to the Madrid airport.

Transportation to and from LAX are not included

Other Transportation:
ACCENT Madrid will provide each participant 25 years of age and under with a Youth All-Zone transit pass, valid on bus, metro, and commuter train for the duration of the program. ACCENT will provide each participant 26 years of age and older with an Adult Zone A (Madrid city) transit pass. valid on bus, metro, and commuter train for the duration of the program

Documentation to process transit passes (valid passport copy and one passport photo with white background) must be received no later than July 30, 2020. Participants failing to provide the pertinent documentation will need to process their own passes upon arrival. ACCENT will reimburse students for the monthly credit, but no reimbursement will be possible for the processing fee.

 Participants will select one of the following housing options:
- Double occupancy room in a shared student apartment. Apartments are co-ed with single-gender bedrooms and are shared with international students as well as other ACCENT participants.
- Double occupancy room in a homestay. Includes breakfast and dinner daily. Homestays are co-ed with single-gender bedrooms and are shared with international students as well as other ACCENT participants. (Limited availability; supplement requirement $500) 
- Single occupancy room in a homestay. Includes breakfast and dinner daily. Homestays are co-ed with single-gender bedrooms and are shared with international students as well as other ACCENT participants. (Limited availability; supplement requirement $800) 

A $2,300 price reduction is provided by ACCENT for participants providing their own housing (Subject to approval by ACCENT)

Hard-copy applications are available at the SBCC Study Abroad Office.

Submit the $250 application deposit with the program application and required documents to the SBCC Study Abroad Office by the application deadline. Please make the check out to ACCENT, our service provider.

We cannot accept cash!

If you wish to pay the application fee per credit card, please complete the credit card information section on the application form. 

Once the completed application is received, an interview with a Study Abroad staff member will be scheduled. If you live outside the Santa Barbara area, you may be interviewed by phone or Skype.

When you have been officially accepted into the program, your application will be forwarded to ACCENT at which point the application fee becomes non-refundable.

Subsequent payments must be made directly to ACCENT. Failure to make any payment when due will automatically cancel you from the program one week after the payment due date. All payments are effective the day they are received by ACCENT.

Any individual cancellation must be made in writing to ACCENT and is effective the date of the receipt by ACCENT. In addition, student must e-mail the SBCC Study Abroad office at nwalther@pipeline.sbcc.edu.  Updated Cancellation Policy as of 4/9/20

If student withdraws 56 days or more prior to start of program a $250 cancellation fee is charged

If student withdraws 45-55 days prior to start of the program a $1,500 cancellation fee is charged

If student withdraws 15-44 days prior to start of the program a $3,000 cancellation fee is charged

If student withdraws 0-14 days prior to start of the program there is no refund and the full program fee is charged

Please note that any student who is academically withdrawn by SBCC after their application has been processed by ACCENT is subject to the standard refund policy.

In the event that the U.S. State Department is issuing a Level 3 Travel Warning which advises U.S. citizens not to travel to Madrid and the program is canceled, ACCENT will refund the entire program fee 

Before the start date of the program, should the U.S. State Department issue a Level 3 Travel Advisory or higher,  that warns American citizens against all non-essential travel to Madrid, Spain, ACCENT will immediately advise SBCC to cancel its program. In such case, if the program is immediately cancelled in writing by SBCC, ACCENT will refund all recoverable costs to all participants on that program.

Should a program be cancelled by SBCC after the program start date, no refund amount can be guaranteed, although ACCENT will make reasonable efforts to seek refunds from third parties for costs not yet incurred. ACCENT will assist students with organizing return tickets home. Any additional charges for transportation or housing will be at the students’ expense.
