Turn your Winter Break into Summer School: Learn to surf at picturesque beaches in Sydney, Australia with SBCC!

Enjoy Sydney鈥檚 natural beauty, from world-class beaches to the dramatic Blue Mountains, while immersing yourself in the surf culture that is so prevalent in coastal Australia. Discover why surfing in Australia is far beyond simply a sport; it's a lifestyle, a cultural phenomenon and integral to the Australian economy. After bringing in the New Year with a spectacular show of fireworks in Sydney, spend a week at a surf camp to hone your surfing skills. As part of the curriculum, study and practice the principles of stretching and relaxation, with daily yoga and stretch classes to complement the surfing activities.

The SBCC Study Abroad program in Australia includes excursions and field trips within the Sydney area, such as the Bondi to Coogee Trail and the Blue Mountains. The program is academic in nature, but it also provides you with the opportunity to make new friends, develop confidence in travelling, and become immersed in Sydney's rich, multicultural history.

Sally Saenger, M.Ed, a Santa Barbara native, is a certified fitness professional who has been teaching at SBCC in both the credit and non-credit division since 1982. While getting her bachelor's degree from the University of Hawaii, she developed her skills as a swimmer, surfer and outdoor enthusiast. She received her Master's Degree in Education from Azusa Pacific University. Sally has a strong background in aquatics, stretching and relaxation techniques, and functional fitness for older adults. She has been recognized for her teaching and service to the community by several organizations. Most recently she was awarded the prestigious Hayward Award for Excellence in Education.

Sally has vast experience in the sports and fitness industry. She has led several fitness-related travel groups and taught internationally in the Bahamas, Dominican Republic and Mexico. Sally's knowledge and passion for teaching is evident, and her positive energy is contagious.

To acquaint program participants with the cultural aspects of life in Sydney, Australia a series of mandatory as well as optional free or inexpensive activities is planned, which varies but often includes lectures on local customs and contemporary issues, sports events, walking tours, sight visits, or dinners.  The below excursions are subject to change due to the current pandemic and will be confirmed in the spring 2021.

- 12 nights in the Bondi Junction area of Sydney 

- 8 -day surf course at the AST surf camp in Thirroul beach, 1 hour south of Sydney

- Spend New Years Eve at Thirroul beach

- Day tour to the Blue Mountain including Scenic World and Featherdale Wildlife Park

- Walking tour of central Sydney

-  Bondi Beach to Coogee Beach Coastal Walking Tour

 You do not have to be currently enrolled at SBCC to apply for the program. However, you must meet the following requirements to participate in the program:

  • Must enroll at SBCC for the spring 2022 semester upon acceptance in the program (once enrollment is open)
  • Must be in good academic standing 
  • Must be at least 18 years old on the day of departure
  • Must successfuly complete the application process
  • Students must be able to demonstrate an ability to swim competently nonstop for 100 meters no later than one month prior to departure *set up time with instructor once you have received the notice that the 20 student minimum has been reached

There is no major or language requirement for this program.

Acceptance and participation in the program is not guaranteed until you have completed the interview with the program director and all required documents are received by the Study Abroad office.

The courses that are offered as part of the program are usually transferable to the University of California and California State University. Check with your academic advisor for possible exceptions.  You must enroll in a minimum of 3 units throughout the whole program.

PE 137 Beginning Surfing - 1.5 Units
Transfer Information: Health and Wellness, CSU Transferable, UC Transferable

PE 146 Stretching and Relaxation - 1.5 Units

Please note:  there will be approximately 16 hours for each class pre and post trip. Most of the hours will be as a group/class and other hours can be arranged. The pre and post swim sessions and tests are part of these hours, as well as the written final exams.

Program Fee Includes:
- $450 application fee
- Mandatory excursions (see 'Program Highlights")
- Transportation and entry fees for mandatory excursions

- Support by Latitudes Abroad LLC to purchase the group flight or individual flight tickets
- Daily breakfast and three (3) dinners.  Note: In Sydney the apartments have full kitchens so we will provide a breakfast food fund to each student rather than a hotel breakfast.

Program Fee Does Not Include:
- Round-trip airfare (an optional group flight is available through Latitudes Abroad LLC for an additional fee,  see "Travel" for more information)
- Passport or visa fees if applicable
- Meals other than those listed
- SBCC tuition, fees, books (non-residents are required to pay out-of-state or out-of-country fees)
- Personal expenses
- Additional fieldtrips and excursions to those listed
- Anything not specified

Deposit of $450 due with application, to be processed once the applicant has been accepted into the program. SBCC can not accept cash. Please, make out a check or money order to Latitudes Abroad LLC.

Final Payment of $2,400 due TBD directly to Latitudes Abroad LLC

Latitudes Abroad LLC will offer a group flight with affordable airline options on China Airlines, EVA Airlines or Cathay Pacific. Latitudes Abroad LLC will purchase the group flight once the minimum number of student participants (20) has been reached.

In addition, Latitudes Abroad LLC will also offer assistance to purchase flights.

12 nights accommodations in 3-bedroom apartments in the Bondi Junction area of Sydney with 3 students per bedroom.

8 nights accommodation at the AST surf camp in Thirroul beach, 1 hour south of Sydney, in twin and triple occupancy.

After review of your application, the program director, Professor Eckford-Prossor will be scheduled. As long as SBCC staff is working remotely or if you live outside of the Santa Barbara area,  interviews will be held by phone, Zoom or Skype.
 
Once you have officially been ccepted to the program, the application with your credit card authozation will be forwarded to AIFS and your non-refundable application fee will be charged. Please review the cancelation policy below or check with Latitudes Abroad.
 
Subsequent payments must be made directly to Latitudes Abroad. Failure to make any payment when due will automatically cancel you from the program one week after the payment due date. All payments are effective the day they are received by Latitudes Abroad.

Cancellations must be done in writing to the SBCC Study Abroad Office at nwalther@pipeline.sbcc.edu and is effective on the date received.

Cancellation Fees:

If a student cancels their participation after being accepted into the program but before TBD the cancellation fee shall be $450. 

For cancellations from TBD the cancellation fee will be TBD.

For cancellations on or after TBD there will be no refund.

These fees are separate from any airline charges.

In the event of the U.S. State Department issuing a Level 3 travel warning that advises U.S. Citizens not to travel to Sydney, Australia, Latitudes Abroad, LLC agrees to the following:

  • If the program has not yet departed, upon consultation and agreement with SBCC, cancel the program and refund all fees paid to Latitudes Abroad, LLC minus any non-recoverable costs.
  • If the program has already departed, assemble the students and faculty in a safe location and upon consultation and agreement with SBCC, suspend the program and coordinate arrangements to fly the students and faculty back to the USA. In this case, students will receive a pro-rated refund of all fees paid to Latitudes Abroad, LLC for the proportion of the program not completed minus any non-recoverable costs, including any costs incurred in coordinating the flights back to the USA.

Prior to departure, there will be a mandatory pre-departure meeting. At this time, the format has not been confirmed. Usually, pre-departure meetings are on the SBCC campus. All details regarding the pre-departure meeting will be e-mailed to students.
